Beneath us was a vast horizontal floor of thin level mists suspended in mid-air, spread like a canopy over the whole boundless landscape, and tinged with every hue of sunset. Above us rose the solemn mass of Mont Blanc in the richest glow of an Alpine sunset. The sense of lonely sublimity was almost oppressive&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He had reached the top with a long tweed coat; his daughter Virginia recalled in various occasions how much his dad loved to wear it around the streets of London, proud of the yellow marks left on it from the ropes.<\/p>\n<p>Before becoming the Mont Blanc, the name of the mountain went through various paths.<br \/>\nThe first known name is<strong><em> Rupes Alb<\/em>a<\/strong> (approximately 1091), <em><strong>Says o Scez Blans<\/strong><\/em> (1319), <em><strong>Mont Sainct Bernard<\/strong><\/em> (1532), <em><strong>Glaciales Montes<\/strong> <\/em>(1581), <em><strong>Mont Malay<\/strong><\/em>, <strong><em>Mont Malet<\/em> <\/strong>or <em><strong>Montagne Maudite<\/strong> <\/em>(1606-1743), other then <em><strong>La Glaci\u00e8re<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Les Glaci\u00e8res<\/strong><\/em> or <em><strong>Les Glassi\u00e8res<\/strong> <\/em>(1741-43). It appeares as <em><strong>Mont Maudite<\/strong><\/em>, on a map printed in Geneva in 1606 curated by Jac Goulartius Genevensi. Avevo iniziato a vincere qualche gara e mi allenavo sciando in neve fresca con una persona che cercava di conquistare le grandi vette: Walter Bonatti. Eravamo visionari, alla ricerca dell'assoluto. Ci confidavamo i nostri sogni, parlavamo del mistero della vita come se potesse un giorno essere svelato. Walter amava il silenzio, la solitudine e le montagne: le guardava con grande amore studiando a tavolino ogni passo, ogni strettoia, ogni appiglio. Walter possedeva innata eleganza e gentilezza d'animo, in lui si avvertiva l'astuzia del giaguaro, una forza di spirito che fluisce e dona la vita. Nei momenti pi\u00f9 difficili, lo spirito lo spronava inarrestabile, la forza superiore del suo essere lo avvolgeva e prendeva il sopravvento. Per i miei 18 anni mi aveva invitato a scalare Les Grandes Jorasses e lass\u00f9, sulla vetta, avevamo condiviso - brindando - la visione di un\u2019Europa Unita, senza frontiere.<\/p><p>La Montagna Sacra richiama anime a cui piace l\u2019introspezione, apparentemente vagabondi dell\u2019inutile.
