The backpack is my home, my caravan, what you want. Just like a snail’s shell. Inside there’s everything I need, having it beside me is my security, a psychological refuge. When you measure yourself with nature, you never win. It’s crazy to say I won such face, I conquered that peak.
\nIf anything, you conquer yourself, measuring your weaknesses and your strengths. On the mountains if you want to survive you have to acknowledge your weaknesses. And, in front of the power of nature you have to bring out your slyness. The image of the minuscule man that wins over Mont Blanc or any other mountain is ridiculous. Man doesn’t win over anything. Nature requires great respect, in every way. But we prefer destruction without realizing that by destroying our environment, we destroy ourselves. Too many times man challenges nature only for the sake of destroying it. Never like today the term adventure has been misused. Adventure as well as courage, they both have been reduced to a series of expected clichees. Everything that is calculated is not adventure, everything that is organized is not adventure. Asserting the excuse of adventure a lot of incapable people is transforming it in an amusement park. The impossible, the mysterious can happen even in my bedroom, in my courtyard. I would conceive and live a long journey even before departing, whilst shaving. I wanted to push myself in the immense solitudes without any technical means, without radio, without planes following me. I was looking for the strength and the will of the antique man, that would explore the world only with his forces. After marching for twenty days I was forced to surrender. Inside me there was a tremendous swing between the will of continuing at all costs and the need to surrender. In the end I had to find the necessary courage to give up. And now I feel richer, especially because I took consciousness of my limits once again.<\/p>\n

I suoi cristalli di quarzo e le rare fluoriti rosse racchiudono biblioteche in cui sono codificate le epoche della terra, storie che ci precedono da milioni di anni.\u00a0I suoi ghiacciai erano per Gaston Rebuffat giardini fiabeschi. Le sue austere pareti di granito e ghiaccio rappresentano ancora oggi, per molti alpinisti, una sfida e un bisogno: sentirsi vivi nel silenzio di spazi immensi.<\/p>
Courmayeur alla fine degli anni '60 era un piccolo paesino di montagna. Avevo iniziato a vincere qualche gara e mi allenavo sciando in neve fresca con una persona che cercava di conquistare le grandi vette: Walter Bonatti. Eravamo visionari, alla ricerca dell'assoluto. Ci confidavamo i nostri sogni, parlavamo del mistero della vita come se potesse un giorno essere svelato. Walter amava il silenzio, la solitudine e le montagne: le guardava con grande amore studiando a tavolino ogni passo, ogni strettoia, ogni appiglio. Walter possedeva innata eleganza e gentilezza d'animo, in lui si avvertiva l'astuzia del giaguaro, una forza di spirito che fluisce e dona la vita. Nei momenti pi\u00f9 difficili, lo spirito lo spronava inarrestabile, la forza superiore del suo essere lo avvolgeva e prendeva il sopravvento. Per i miei 18 anni mi aveva invitato a scalare Les Grandes Jorasses e lass\u00f9, sulla vetta, avevamo condiviso - brindando - la visione di un\u2019Europa Unita, senza frontiere.<\/p>
La Montagna Sacra richiama anime a cui piace l\u2019introspezione, apparentemente vagabondi dell\u2019inutile. Sir Leslie Stephen, padre di Virginia Woolf, nell\u2019agosto del 1873 arrivava in vetta per ammirare il tramonto.\u00a0 Sui pendii della Montagna Sacra Walter Bonatti cercava la solitudine come condizione per vivere pi\u00f9 intensamente .
Dopo la mitica impresa della salita invernale in solitaria, nel febbraio 1965,\u00a0alla Nord del Cervino, Walter sceso a Zermatt dichiarava:
\u00abDedico questa impresa al centenario della conquista del Cervino e all\u2019Europa Unita\u00bb.\u00a0Un messaggio che anticipava i tempi a venire, un richiamo alla condivisione e alla fraternit\u00e0.<\/p>
